Business executives from Japan, Italy and Portugal have arrived in West Virginia to learn about the state's aerospace capabilities.

Sixteen representatives from 13 companies arrived on 16 October at the Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center in Bridgeport. The international executives were welcomed by governor Joe Manchin, who talked to them about the aerospace industry and the advantages of doing business in West Virginia.

"This mission will provide these industry leaders and the companies they represent with a better understanding of our growing aerospace and high-technology industries," said the governor. "The skilled work force, strong aerospace industry presence and other advantages to be found in West Virginia present many opportunities for us to work together."

In addition to the governor's remarks, the industry leaders heard presentations from Mid-Atlantic Aerospace Complex, Aurora Flight Sciences, Bombardier, Lockheed Martin, FMW Composite, Robert C. Byrd Institute and Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center. The visitors also took a tour of the Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center and Pratt & Whitney Engine Services.

The West Virginia aerospace mission is the result of joint efforts by the Discover the Real West Virginia foundation, the West Virginia Development Office and the Mid-Atlantic Aerospace Complex.

"Aerospace is one of the most critical industries in today's global economy and West Virginia will not be left behind," said senator Jay Rockefeller. "This aerospace mission is just one example of how we are actively promoting the industry – building on our state's strong tradition of manufacturing and engineering excellence. I will continue to fight for the growth of this critical industry in our great state."

The European and Japanese executives met with federal aviation officials to learn about doing business with the government, the aerospace industry in the US and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification and other requirements.
